Saxon Farm winning Triumph Hurdle

Saxon Farm winning Triumph Hurdle, Cheltenham 1983

In 1988 the Birchall family moved to Helshaw Grange, having outgrown (after the expansion of their breeding operation) the land and the facilities at their previous home in North Wales. Helshaw Grange was a purpose built stud, with readymade facilities set in 340 acres of prime Shropshire countryside.

The Birchall family has had a long equestrian history. Deborah and Rachel grew up riding ponies and both competed to a high level and Alan and Sandra Birchall owned horses in both National Hunt racing and Three Day eventing in which they enjoyed great success.

Saxon Farm was their most successful horse under rules, winning 6 out of 8 races over hurdles and was placed 2nd and 3rd in the other 2; Saxon Farm's biggest moment was entering the winners enclosure at the Cheltenham Festival when he won the Daily Express Triumph Hurdle in 1983.
